General Information

The “Gateway to the Shenandoah Valley,” Martinsburg, is hailed as the fastest growing city in the state and it’s proving that to be true. Located in the heart of the Eastern Panhandle, Martinsburg is the county seat for Berkeley County and growing more every year. Close to major metropolitan areas of Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, it is becoming the place to commute from for those who work in the ‘big city.’

Downtown revitalization and strong community values of residents welcome any visitor who comes to town, as well as new residents. Small enough to know your neighbors, but big enough to offer great amenities and recreation, the welcome mat is out and waiting for you!

History

Founded by General Adam Stephen in 1778, Martinsburg was named in honor of Colonel Thomas B. Martin. By 1842, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad had reached Martinsburg and the first station built in 1849. Incorporated in 1868, by 1889, electricity was brought to Martinsburg and in 1891, industry had found a home here, as well as recreational venues such as the Apollo Civic Theatre.

Apollo Theatre
Built in 1913, the Apollo was home to many and varied state productions, but fell into disuse until citizens and various civic organizations cleaned it up, refurbished it and turned back the clock to its glory days.
